Chiloe Island in Chile

Chiloe Island in Chile

After spending more than two weeks going up the Carretera Austral, and the troubles of taking a few ferries, I finally reached the Chiloe Island, the largest island within the Chiloe archipelago, in the South of Chile.

We reached Puerto Montt and were lucky to be able to catch the last bus to go to Castro, the main city within Chiloe.

Colorful houses in Castro

We spent there 2 days, walking around the city, along the coast. It’s a really nice city, some houses along the beach are on pillars, called “Palafitos”, there are wooden churches, lots of colorful houses, it’s pretty cool 🙂

After walking around in Castro, we took a bus to go to Cucao, a small village (like really small 🙂 ) on the West coast of Chiloe. There is a national park there and another touristy attraction called “El Muelle de las Almas” (the dock of souls).
It was funny, we left Castro in the morning when it was sunny, and little by little when we got closer to the coast there were more and more clouds, and when we reached Cucao it was totally foggy! Anyway, we went to see El Muelle de las Almas, you get there by taking a small bus and then walking into a forest and through hills to reach the coast. The walk was pretty nice, and when we got there it was still foggy, but I have to admit, totally ridiculous 🙂

El Muelle de las Almas and its tourists 🙂

There where around 50 tourists queueing to take a picture on the dock, each one taking the 4 different poses: facing the sea with arms open, facing the camera with arms open, sitting on the dock facing the sea, sitting on the dock facing the camera 🙂
We sat next to the queue as it got bigger as more people were joining in, and managed to sneak a few pictures when the sky cleared and while people were walking in and out of the dock 🙂

El Muelle de las Almas

Although the place is quite impressive with nice weather! In the local tradition, el Muelle de las Almas was there for a guide to take the souls of the dead over the sea. I have to say that with the fog and the low clouds, the place was quite mystical…

The West coast of Chiloe

After this trip we got back to the village of Cucao and took a walk on the beach, as the sky was completely cleared 🙂

On the next day we took a bus to Ancud, another city on the North of the Island, the entry point to the continent. We spent a day walking around on the coast, and one cool thing is that when the weather is clear you can see three volcanos on the continent from the island!

The following day I said goodbye to Cornelia, the Swiss-German girl I’ve been travelling with for the last 10 days and headed to Puerto Montt to welcome another friend who will be travelling with me for the next 2 weeks, and together we will head North to Santiago 🙂

Sauf à Cucao, où pour nous aussi il y avait beaucoup de monde pour la photo devant le ponton en bois;)
